The Engine

Driving a brand forward

Engine Ventures and The Engine Accelerator help bridge the gap between discovery and commercialization for the most promising breakthrough inventions, and accelerate the pathway for Tough Tech founders and companies. Their brand and platform needed to inspire while speaking to multiple audiences about complex topics and multiple missions. We've worked with them since they first emerged from MIT in 2016, and have partnered up repeatedly over the years to strategically evolve their brand as their business expands and their vision transforms.

Tech strategy

When The Engine spun out of MIT, Tough Tech wasn't an established asset class. But The Engine was built on the premise that the hardest science, the type that takes a decade and a wet lab to reach the market, needed its own kind of institution and its own way of telling its story. We built the brand for their category-defining vision, and we've been the studio behind it ever since.

Now, The Engine's work spans two organizations. The Engine functions as the nonprofit incubator that houses founders and their equipment, and Engine Ventures is the firm that funds them. As that structure solidified, we recalibrated the Engine Ventures brand separately to fit the updated mission, giving the investment side its own voice without severing it from the ecosystem it grew out of.

The constant challenge is audience. A single page has to resonate with a fusion physicist, a limited partner, an MIT administrator, and a policymaker at once, on subjects that resist easy explanation. We've designed for clarity under that load across every iteration, rather than retreating into abstraction.

A decade later, the throughline hasn't changed, despite a more complex org chart and science that's pushing even further than we could have imagined. We continue to build a brand that makes science that most people can't understand feel worth betting on.
