Since its origins as GiveWell labs in 2011, Open Philanthropy and funding partner Good Ventures have directed over $4 billion in grants to myriad organizations and projects. They actively seek out neglected causes and continually “show their work” by publishing reports on the outcomes of their giving.
The leadership at Open Philanthropy came to us at an inflection point: to reflect their growing role as advisor to external funders on collaborative funds, they planned both a name change and a new strategy for presenting their work to potential partners, prospective grantees, and the public at large.
We loved the name “Coefficient” as soon as we saw it proposed by the folks at A Hundred Monkeys. It captures the organization’s analytical approach, the team’s collaborative spirit, and the 'multiplier effect' that becomes possible with smarter philanthropy.
We leaned on these distinctive qualities in developing an integrated brand and website for Coefficient. To showcase the breadth and rigor of their work, we developed a system of diagrammatic illustrations, text-forward modules, and color themes. It’s a system that mixes lightweight interfaces with dense information and provides footnotes for every claim along the way.
Our work brings together a new visual brand, a unified digital strategy, and two new websites to support this new chapter and re-introduce Coefficient and Good Ventures to the world.
The coefficientgiving.org homepage features an abstracted data visualization of all the organization’s grants to date. New fund pages get prominent landing pages with custom illustrations, and visitors can easily get a high-level overview or browse grants by amount or year.
Coefficient’s Research & News section of the website goes especially deep, featuring longform research reports with plenty of footnotes. We revamped this reading experience with a new type stack, a sticky table of contents, and footnotes that appear in the margin.
Good Ventures
Much of Coefficient’s work is made possible by Good Ventures, the foundation started by Dustin Moskovitz (a Facebook cofounder) and Cari Tuna. But their site had grown stagnant over the past decade and needed to better reflect their new relationship to Coefficient.
Together we took the opportunity to do more than a refresh: we re-organized the content structure and made the homepage a simpler, one-scroll introduction to the work. We created new homes for Speaking & Writing and an archive of media mentions. Incorporating a tuned-up logo from Jessica Hische, we developed a new, more organic type and color palette, and brought it all to life with a touch of motion and interactivity.
