Harvard Innovation Labs

Reflecting a thriving innovation community

i-Lab is a hub for Harvard students, alumni, and the community to come together to nurture groundbreaking ideas and drive innovation. They were seeking to upgrade their presence through a brand refresh and a website redesign. We energized their digital identity by highlighting the success stories of i-Lab. With practical tools for the staff to manage the complex flow of users, funds, and programs, the site both embodies and serves its community.

With impressive stats—2,372 members, 1,494 explorers, 485 venture teams, and wide recognition as the #1 place for recently funded founders—i-Lab needed a digital presence that matched their real-world impact. Their existing website undersold their story. It didn't reflect the vibrancy of their community or provide clear pathways for prospective members to get involved. So we reimagined how i-Lab tells its story.

Every event at i-Lab is an onboarding opportunity. We repositioned events as the primary entry point, giving visitors a clear, low-risk way to engage with the community. From pizza parties to rigorous sessions with industry leaders, these gatherings showcase i-Lab's collaborative spirit and provide natural connection points for newcomers.

The data hints at an impressive community, but the existing site didn’t effectively showcase it. We created dynamic venture pages that scale from simple profiles to rich narratives, highlighting the diverse range of innovations emerging from i-Lab: AI-driven sneaker-fitting, breakthrough biotechnology, education tech, and everything in between. These profiles serve as individual founder portfolios as well as collective proof of the program's impact, and are easy to build as part of a larger flexible storytelling system.

We developed an authentic innovation aesthetic, designed to feel both aspirational and approachable. The updated palette provides clear differentiation between labs while maintaining brand unity. Photography takes precedence over graphics, capturing real collaboration and authentic moments rather than abstract concepts.

The Craft foundation provides a modular content management system, integration with existing organizational tools, dynamic content relationships that reduce manual curation, and scalable architecture designed for future expansion as the program grows. Content relationships are powered by shared taxonomies, ensuring that new stories automatically surface in relevant contexts across the site. The platform connects seamlessly with existing tools like Salesforce, Airtable, and Eventbrite while treating all content uniformly regardless of source.
