MIT’s Climate Primer

Climate science, risks, and solutions for everyone

Dr. Kerry Emanuel wrote the book on climate science, quite literally. But, the book was written for scientists, not general audiences. We worked with Dr. Emanuel and the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative to bring climate science 101 to the Internet, making the material accessible to all.

What We Made

A collage of images includes a timeline slide from 1824 about climate science, a line graph, a close-up of rocky terrain, and a view of Earth from space, overlaid with partially visible text about climate and gases.

Our goal was to show the world how MIT informs, educates, and creates a foundation of knowledge for students on complicated global issues. We also wanted to make this content accessible to the general public. The primer rises above mainstream media coverage of climate change and prompts a more nuanced conversation about risk management, uncertainty, and the path our planet is on.

MIT had the backbone of the story, but we helped reposition it. Our team broke down the original paper, paragraph by paragraph. We edited for clarity and found moments to re-explain text-heavy concepts with interactive demos. By augmenting Dr. Emanuel’s work with audio, video, animated graphs, diagrams, quiz questions, and other interactive moments, we could engage all types of learners. You can leapfrog through the material in many mediums, reading every line of text or just listening to one audio clip. Either way, you’re bound to walk away learning something you didn’t know about climate science.

We always love working with MIT, but this project was especially near and dear to our hearts. Bringing the source material to life online was a true collaborative effort with our MIT team, and you’ll catch hints of their personality and passion throughout the finished product. We believe that getting to do great work with visionary clients is typically its own reward, but we couldn’t be prouder that this one won a Webby for Best Individual Editorial Feature.
